“I am attracted to the mysterious… to things that hold visual surprises,” says David Sheekwan when describing his first book, “Photographs by David Sheekwan.”
After completing his professional training in ceramics and paintings on a three-year scholarship at the San Francisco Art Institute, David Sheekwan left San Fracisco for Paris where he opened his own design studio. Soon after, he enjoyed much success styling and designing fabrics and fashions for various fabric houses, including New York’s Concord Fabrics. Sheekwan’s fabrics were innovative for their time. Although successful, Sheekwan retuned to his native Hong Kong to start a new venture. In the 80s, he launched his own line of clothing under the label name of David Sheekwan, and he opened boutiques in New York and Hong Kong.
In the 80s, again, he embarked on the new venture to be an artist. He found that the only way he could capture any moment of mood was with his camera. With this new venture, he entered the Parson’s School of Design, attended photography classes at the University of California in Los Angeles, and in the summer of ’99, participated in photography workshops held in Santa Fe, New Mexico. The fruits of this new venture became his first photography book, “Photographs by David Sheekwan.”
