• At any rate, "Chinese Opera: Images and Stories" by Siu Wang-Ngai (with Peter Lovrick) is an excellent written introduction to Chinese Opera. It is filled with gorgeous photographs by Hong Kong lawyer, Siu Wang-Ngai, who "attended the theatre constantly, taking more than 30,000 photos." His fear was that this lovely art form was slowly fading away and he wanted to record as much as he could for future generations.
The text begins with an introduction to the Chinese dramatic tradition, which is "a blend of song, speech, mime, dance, and acrobatics, held together by theatrical conventions resting on a concept of drama quite different from the realism and naturalism that have had such influence in the West." Each region of China has its own dramatic conventions, and depending on how 'opera' is defined, the Chinese have been watching this complex and beautiful art form for two millennia. Dramatic traditions became popular and declined as dynasties rose and fell. The second chapter in this book goes into detail on a few of the more than 300 different regional opera styles. The Peking opera repertoire with its emphasis on "historical or legendary stories that emphasized virtue, courage, and loyalty" is the tradition that is most familiar to Westerners.
The third chapter, "Conventions" discusses the props, stage, musical instruments, and role types in Chinese opera. This is the chapter you will want to read in order to get a glimmering of what is happening on the operatic stage (other than a cacophony of drums, gongs and cymbals!) For instance, "the male clown 'chou' has a distinctive white patch of make-up around the nose and speaks in the vernacular."
The remainder of the book (except for "A Final Word") groups the operas into the following categories and discusses some of the most prominent examples: "Heavenly Beings;" "Emperors and Their Ladies;" "Generals and Warriors;" "Scholars and Officials;" "Wealthy Families;" "Common Folk: Those Who Are Ruled;" "The Religious;" "Outlaws;" and "Ghosts."
For those of us who are interested in this ancient art form, this book is a grand, lavishly illustrated introduction.
