I was browsing through my pictures and there're a few points to add.. occasionally (normally accidentally) when I managed to take advantage of the distortion of a wide angle lens, the result can be quite surprising.
This one is taken with the ZM 21/4.5, and actually it's a very small tree by a small slope, but appeals to be quite big in this picture...
Another interesting thing about wide angle lenses is that they can "compress" very different things together, like things that are very different in size, or are very far apart. This picture is taken in Wan Chai, again with the ZM 21/4.5 (my favorite wide angle lens!)
Agree! Especially when I shoot film, I find that the proportion of unsatisfactory pictures is larger than pictures taken with lenses of other focal lengths. But, occasionally, the pleasant surprises are often greater.
I think the main challenge is one needs to be able to "compress" what is before one's eyes, and imagine how the scene would look like through a wide angle lens...
I think a few agreed rules of thumb are...
1. Be (very) close to the subject
2. Shoot at "odd" angles, like from below, from high above, etc
3. Be extra conscious about unwanted elements in the picture
I tend to use existing lines and fall off dof when using a wide lens, love the 14mm and 15mm perspective. I think it's great perspective to move along with the subjects.
i agree with inzite ching, it is very important to make good use of existing structures and lines when one is shooting a wide angle lens. Bcoz a wide angle had such a large perspective, it is very hard for the audience to notice the subject of your shot or being drawn to your shot. Hence, I will always try to use existing structures to draw the line of focus.

- the snake line bridge run the eye sight to the ambulance, then all the way to reveal the gap on of the cityscape on the left hand side. Cheung kong building on the right serve as a huge block to "force" the audience to look to the left of the photo.

- all the radial lines and circle easily isolate the subject despite the large field of view

- despite the field is wide and the subject is small, i hope that the 2 "walls" on both left and right would direct the audience eye sight towards the empty space ahead and to the 2 little black shadows.
