This seabird (a Northern Fulmar, the original "Angry Bird") starved to death because its beak got entangled in fishing nets.

The black sands were once lava erupted from Vatnajökull, the largest volcano in Iceland.  Presently, the ice cap on Vatnajökull is the biggest glacier in Europe.

This hobbiton-like church is a turf church.  The grass and mud on the roof is for heat insulation, particularly useful in extremely cold weather.  The lumpy grass bubbles in the foreground are burial mounds.

Vik, Iceland, whose rocky islets famously appear on so many a brochure, was a box any first-time visitor to Iceland would check.

Notwithstanding its international fame, unconsciously I had not planned to stay there overnight, opting rather to drive by this unmissable destination enroute Route 1.

When I arrived, I learnt it was a tourist town, even though it must have been an idyllic scenic spot decades ago.  It was amazing how an entire industry could be built on several rocks.

Promotional materials were filled with close-ups of the islets, made to look stunningly grandiose, just for the sake of getting people to go there.  This was not my point of view and I took a single picture as shown.

Wherever humans go in large numbers, inevitably there would be degradation.  Perhaps this is part of our original sin, a sad fact that I am learning to accept.
