Using wife or woman friend may work in the West and in China but not in HK. HK girls do not want COMPARISON! They want to be the center of attention. Make them feel special and you will get results. Speaking English always helped. When I came to HK 20 years ago, I asked a very pretty HK girl at the TST MTR the direction to the Convention Center. She took me to the front door. When I thanked her, she replied softly "you really didn't know the way?"

I do agree based on my experience in China.
My Putonghua has very strong Cantonese accent.
Once I said something like" May I take a picture of you?"
The local people recognize I am either from Hong Kong or Taiwan and are willing to post for me.

I really wanted direction but I chose to ask the pretty girl because she looked pretty and nice. Looks do count. I do not mean nice looking but nice demeanor. If the girl looks like a ba por, stay away!
