It's almost no surprise that another new, relatively interesting lens has been announced from a hitherto unknown Chinese manufacturer. Following in the footsteps of more established brands like Zy Optics (Mitakon) and Laowa, who caught the attention of shutterbugs by introducing a series of very fast primes, a company called DZOptics is entering the fray with a 35mm f/1.2 under the Kerlee line. It's the world's first 35mm f/1.2 lens for full-frame, and seems intriguing on paper. It can focus up to 0.3m, has 11 elements in 10 groups, and has a switchable aperture lock for video recording. Weighing 690g, the lens uses 72mm filters and will be available for Pentax K, Canon EF, Nikon F, and Sony E.We spoke to New Zealand-based wedding and portrait photographer Richard Wong who received a pre-production review sample from Kerlee, and he kindly sent us some sample photos to share with our readers. Wong also runs a review site, and the full set of his images are available here. He tested it out on a Nikon D800 and was quite impressed, mentioning that if DZOptics manage to fix a few minor issues, the Kerlee 35mm f/1.2 will “easily the most well-made Chinese lens”.
