Hi all. I plan to start a thread here on my experience in shooting in Taiwan here. Anyone is welcome to comment and ask question.

I will try to cover as much as I can on everything I know. I will also keep updating information as I go a long.

Taiwan is a beautiful place and have plenty of area to shoot, from old buildings to street photos to old streets to scenic/landscape.

I did a lot of research myself to try to find out as much things as I can and I encourage anyone who plans to go to do the same thing.

I will continue to write and update as I discover more places and also little tips along the way.

Yang ming shan 陽明山have a few good spot worth visiting. I am not going to talk about the"touristy" parts.

Ones i recommend are

a) 小油坑

b) 冷水坑露上泡腳池

c) 擎天崗

d) 竹子湖

e) 大屯山

will add more later...

I recommend visiting all these spots by driving, the driveup the mountain is very easy. Using google map will be just fine to all theplaces mentioned. However it will get mixed up with some walk path at certainparts. The drive is much shorter than most think.

The most usual route is to go up 仰德大道，howeverthere is this restricted access imposed on public holidays. Unless you can showthem your residence pass, you will NOT be allow to use this route to go up hillmost of the day during public holidays. all the other routes are considered tobe "back routes" 後山.

Yangming shan is actually a conservation area, and itspretty BIG! In a way its kind of in the middle of Taipei District (Taipei City+ New Taipei)台北+新北市

There are also mini buses that circulate the mountain tomost tourist spot but its more for local tourist who will spend a day trackingaround or local who is interested in hiking.

小油坑

小油坑 in my opinion is best for Black and whitephotography. Time of visit needs to be carefully planned. For close up photosof boiling water puddles with steam coming out, you will need to visit theplace AFTER a fare amount of rain. There are a few small spots where you cancapture these shots before you reach the end of the very short sight seeingtrail. At the end of the trail is where you are closest to the site which ifyou have tele zoom can get you some nice photos with great details. However Ido not find that spot to be the best spot to take wide angle photos, the spotpointed out in attached photo will give you a better foreground and element ifyou want to capture this spot.

Obviously colder weather will be more ideal for capturingbecause you will have more dramatic steam but do be aware that there might bevery strong fog. A check on the local weather station will definitely help. http://www.cwb.gov.tw/V7/observe/webcam/

This link might change as they update the site so basicallygo into “即時影像”and pick “陽明山”there is a web cam function that lets you take a quick look to check.

If you are lucky, the “pit stop” should be open and you can try theirspecial ice lolly.

Also a quick reminder that this scenic spot charges parking fees!!!

There is also a small spot on the way up the road to the parking lot whereyou can get a nice S shape road shot on your right with mountain in thebackground.

大屯山 Datun Shand

So what is so special about this particular mountain range?This is because it’s the ONLY one you can drive all the way to the top of it.

The drive up is fairly easy as well and only gets a bitchallenging towards the end.  There willbe no street lights for the last stretch (+-300M vertical climb) so one have todrive carefully. Turns are also very sharp.

Again, best to check the weather forecast in the linkmentioned above to make sure you got a good chance on photo opportunity.

So what is this spot good for?  Its great for Sunrise, Sunset, Night timecityscape with Stars. That’s one of the advantages of being up top. Accordingto other enthusiast I met when I was there, the best time to photograph Sea ofclouds is during winter time. The cloud level will just drop slightly below theviewing deck and give you amazing view.

Looking at the map below, you will notice one thing, aportion of the map is mosaiced. This is not an error by google maps butactually banned by Taiwan government. These are “high security” militarycompound. Trespassing and photographic these sites will get you into serioustrouble.

Now I pointed down spot A and B, Spot A will be mainly forsunrise. Please do some research and find out where the sun will be comingfrom. Also this is one of the rare place in Taipei that you will get a lot ofother photographers taking photos. Do come early Next to spot A there is alittle trail which you can also walk down a little for sunrise. In a normal daydown the trail you will see the night time cityscape of Taipei.

Spot B will be great for sunset but I think the chance ofone seeing all the way to the waterfront is slim. This spot I still haven’thave a chance to full explore yet.

Along the road up, there is another stop “C”. This spot isabout 150M below the top and if you are unforturnate and go hit by thick fog uptop, you can try your luck here too. Walk in a little bit and there is anotherhiking trail that takes you all the way up to the top as well.  There is also a half way stop on this trailwhere one can rest and take photos.

taiwan is full of these. its all have to do with earthquakes, their influences by japanese culture and also their political history. earthquake - cant build high there for they always build to the edge of their plot
Japanese influence - their building styles are very similar to ones of japan in early 50's
history- they never meant to stay here that long, most structure are more on a "temporary" base.

For more specifics, they have a lot of old streets 老街 and even more abandoned house of all sorts.

Very bad luck yesterday.... Flew to taipei again but delay in airport, forgot to brin computer chargers and left iPad in the plane...
I will go buy another charger this afternoon.

Will also post up more photos on each sections when I have access to my archives.

(ipad found, being sent to me. computer charger bought already)
