Maybe it was during World Cup time, I felt very safe. I did run into some drunk beggars for a couple of times, which is normal and you see them everywhere in the world anyway. Just ignore them and you will be fine. And course, if you are still concerned, you can get a local private tour guide (there are lots of reference on Tripadvisor.com), or get a "local friend" from Rentalocalfriend.com. I did both cases to cover different days and purposes. They are not expensive. If it's your 1st time, is recommended so, as this will comfort your mind. And to the favelas, you should join one of those local tours. There are ones arranging for a profit, so more expensive. But there are also ones doing it for the community, which is very cheap. The one I joined to Sanata Marta was one of those non-profit ones, and charged me only BRL50. After all, I love Rio, and I will definitely go again, the only problem to me is the long flight. |
